some kind of a eulogy

for a dearly departed friend and colleague…

GARRY CORPUZ

September 1, 1973 - June 6, 2006

we weren’t close. we never shared each other’s sob stories but the news of his demise left me sad and i have to admit that i will surely miss him.

i will never see him again and hear him say, "o, late ka na, kath!" or "galingan mo sa paghugas ng kubyertos ha?" that’s how we became comfortable with each other: sa asaran. i don’t even recall how it all started. all i remember is that he used to tease me because i used to bring my own plate and cutlery.

for a very long time, we were both on the same shift (the morning shift); we sometimes see each other in the pantry and share the same table. minsan naman, we ride the same fx to work. bottomline: he was a familiar figure. yun yun eh. more than a year din na familiarity yun… i can still hear his voice and how he gives his opening spiel when i transfer a call to him..

what’s more heartbreaking was the way he died. it was not an accident, it was not because of a terminal disease. he died in the hands of their caretaker. it’s ironic that he was murdered by a person who his mom treated with trust. what happened to garry was gory and extremely angering.

as my sister puts it, "wala kang karapatan na umangkin ng gamit ng ibang tao. at wala kang karapatan na patayin ang isang tao para lang angkinin ang gamit na pinaghirapan ng ibang tao."

in any case, i’m glad i met him.
